Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team is likely designing a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
